A Psychiatric Study on the Adolescent Psychiatric In-Patient




Abstract
This study was attempted to examine the various clinical features of the adolescent patients for the past 14 years, and furthermore to assess the socio-cultural influence about the admission frequency of the adolescent in-patient.
The row sampling number put into the analysed consisted of 877 adolescent in-patient(429 males and 448 females). Thereafter analyzable number(692 patients) was sellected by chart review.
Summary of the results were presented below.
1) The adolescent proportion among the total neuropsychiatric inpatients was 16.9 percent (male 19.1 percent, female 15.2 percent).
2) In the diagnostic distributions, there were psychotic disorder: 32.6 percent, neurotic disorder: 22. 0 percent, personality disorder: 19. 3 percent, affective disorder: 8. 8 percent and adjustment disorder: 7. 7 percent in order.
3) The proportion of the adolescent inpatients was increased in the :politically revolutional period, and it was decreased in the educationally revolutional period.
4) The main symptoms of the adolescent mental disorders were headache, insomnia, anxiety, depression, unrealistic thinking, persecutory delusion, idea of reference, streotypy, incoherence, and gastrointestinal symptoms, in order.
5) In considering the sex, the thought disorder was prominent in the male patients, and the affective disorder was prominent in the female patients.
6) In considering the age, the behavior problem and achievement problem were prominent in early adolescent inpatients, and the thought problem was prominent in the late adolescent inpatients.
7) In considering the relation of the diagnostic categories with the psychosocial stresses, there were tendencies that the psychotic disorder and personality disorder result from intrafamilial problems, the adjustment disorder from school problems, the affective disorder from
heterosexual problems, and the neurotic disorder from economic problems.
8) Among the psychosocial stresses, the intrafamilial problems were increased annually, in contrast the school problems were decreased annually.
